The title of this article is not propositions, but great prepositions. Those little words we learned in English grammar classes lend meaning in an article, essay or simple paragraph. Remember most prepositions are for the most part anything a rabbit can do to a hill. A rabbit can go "by" a hill, "through" the hill, and "for" the hill. so much for your grammar lesson, and now for some glorious theology.
It is "by" grace that you are saved through faith in Jesus Christ. We did not choose to know God or cooperate in any way to come near Him. We walked in our trespasses and guilt and still do daily. But God, who is rich in mercy, made corpses alive. God's riches at Christ's expense are yours. God became flesh in Jesus to save people from Hell and the grave. By His unconditional favor the Father looked to lowly sinners like us. He sought, He saved, and He secured us by the blood of the cross.
By grace "through" faith in Jesus Christ we have salvation. God's grace is channeled through His word as proclaimed to us. Faith is a gift as well, and it is the instrument that apprehends the forgiveness of sins. Children hear and believe, middle aged people hear and believe and senior adults hear and believe. Faith comes from hearing the good news that God gave His Son to deliver us from damnation. Through faith or trust in Christ alone, are we made right with God.
We are created in Christ Jesus "for" good works. God designed us to be His "pieces of art" to the world even though we are broken, bruised and beat. The Holy Spirit calls, gathers and enlightens us to believe and act for the kingdom. As "works of art" we worship, serve our families, love others in the workplace, and remember to pray even for enemies.
Three prepositions tell a story for us. Ephesians 2:8-10 says clearly, "By grace are you saved through faith; it is a gift of God; you are created in Christ Jesus for good works that you should walk in them.
